Is there hope after neurological distemper stage?

Help, I'm at my wit's end with my sweet pup, Max. He was diagnosed with distemper a few weeks ago, and despite following the vet's advice to the letter, we've hit a rough patch. Over the past couple of days, he's started showing signs of neurological issues—twitching, loss of balance, and this heartbreaking blank stare. I'm trying to stay optimistic, but it's hard seeing him like this. Does anyone have experience with their dog pulling through at this stage? I'm desperate for some hope or advice on what else I can do for him. Thanks in advance for any guidance you can share.

Answer

Thank you for reaching out with your question. I'm really sorry to hear your pet is going through this. Canine distemper is a tough virus that can affect many systems in the body, including the nervous system. In the neurological stage, you might see symptoms like tremors, seizures, or difficulty walking. While it's a serious condition, there is still hope.

A key thing is supportive care. Ensure your pet stays hydrated and nourished, even if it means hand-feeding or using a feeding syringe. Keep them comfortable in a quiet, warm area. Here are some signs to watch for that might require immediate attention: worsening seizures, severe disorientation, or if they stop eating and drinking altogether.

Sometimes, with the right care and a bit of luck, dogs can stabilize and improve over time, especially if these symptoms are managed well. It's important to keep in close touch with a vet to tailor the care to your pet's needs.

I recommend booking a video consult with one of our Dial A Vet professionals. They can guide you more specifically based on your pet's condition and provide the support you need during this challenging time.
