I’m really at a loss here and could use some advice. My sweet girl, Daisy, was recently diagnosed with Intervertebral Disc Disease (IVDD), and it's been absolutely heartbreaking to see her in discomfort. We’ve been following all the vet’s instructions—keeping her on strict crate rest, administering the prescribed pain meds, and doing everything to minimize her movements. Despite all this, she still seems to be in pain at times. It’s so hard to see her usual joyful spirit dampened. Does anyone have any tips for additional ways to keep her comfortable and help her through this tough time? Maybe there are alternative therapies or supplements that worked for your dog? Any advice would be greatly appreciated—we just want to do everything we can to support our little fur baby. Thanks in advance!
Thanks for reaching out about your dog's comfort with Intervertebral Disc Disease (IVDD). It’s important to manage this condition carefully to ensure your pup stays comfortable and happy.
First, make sure your dog rests as much as possible; this is crucial for recovery. Limit activities that may strain their back, such as jumping or climbing stairs. You might consider creating a cozy space at ground level where they can relax undisturbed.
Using supportive harnesses can help when they need to go outside, reducing strain on their spine. Keep your dog at a healthy weight, as extra pounds can put additional pressure on their back.
Watch for signs of pain such as yelping, trembling, or reluctance to move. If you notice any changes in their ability to walk, urinate, or perform normal daily activities, it could indicate a more serious problem needing immediate attention.
For extra comfort, you can apply a warm compress to the painful area for short periods. However, never place anything too hot on their skin.
If symptoms worsen, or if you're unsure about their current treatment, I highly recommend booking a video consult with Dial A Vet for personalized advice specific to your dog’s condition. We're here to help you through this!
