Question:

Is there an actual difference between Vet-meds & Human grade equivalents?

I'm feeling really torn and could use some advice or personal experiences anyone might have. I recently found out that my poor dog, Max, needs some medication that I swear seems exactly like a human version I've seen before. Obviously, I want the best for him, but the vet-prescribed meds are way more expensive than what I'd pay for similar human ones. Do they really differ that much, or is there something extra in the vet version that justifies the higher price? I don't want to risk anything with Max's health, but if it's the same stuff, I could save quite a bit for other expenses at home. Has anyone else faced this dilemma? What did you do, and how did it turn out? Thanks so much for any guidance.

Answer:

Hello there! That’s a great question and an important one to understand when considering the best care for your pet. The primary difference between veterinary and human-grade medications is how they're formulated and dosed. Medications for pets are specifically designed to be safe and effective for their unique physiology, which can differ significantly from humans.

One major concern with using human medications is dosing, as pets have different metabolic rates. For instance, what might be a normal dose for a human can be too much or too little for a pet, leading to ineffective treatment or even toxicity. Additionally, inactive ingredients or coatings in human medications might not be safe for animals or could cause allergic reactions.

For minor conditions, like an upset stomach or mild pain, some human medications might seem to work—but it’s crucial to consult a vet first. For instance, certain over-the-counter human pain relievers can be toxic to pets, even in small doses.

If you notice any adverse reactions, like vomiting, diarrhea, changes in behavior, or difficulty breathing, reach out for veterinary care immediately.

If you have specific concerns or think your pet needs medication, it's always safest to chat with a vet. I'd highly encourage you to book a video consult with Dial A Vet for personalized advice tailored to your furry friend’s needs. Stay safe!

The "Ask a Vet" forum on Dial A Vet offers general information and helpful tips on pet health, but it's not a substitute for professional veterinary care. The advice here doesn't create a veterinarian-client-patient relationship, and our vets can't diagnose or treat your pet remotely. For emergencies or specific medical concerns, always contact your local veterinarian immediately. Your pet's health is unique, and decisions should only be made after consulting with a qualified professional. By using this forum, you acknowledge these limitations and agree to seek in-person veterinary advice for all your pet's health needs. View our content guidelines.

It was so easy, I needed some eye drops for my dog and thinking about going to the vet on a weekend made me nervous about the cost involved. Dial A Vet was a much simpler, cheaper option with faster results. Within 10 minutes of the call, I had the medicine I needed for my dog without an expensive consultation.

What an amazing service, at my wits end as I knew my beautiful dog had an ear infection, could not get into the vet for 4 days. Never knew there was vets online until I googled. Within 15 minutes on a Sunday I was taking to beautiful Samantha who diagnosed and treated our Jasper. Only $49. She trusted that we knew our boy and gave us lots of advice. I will definitely be using dial a vet every time and sharing with all my friends and family. Absolutely fantastic kind caring service. 11/10
