I’m freaking out and could really use some advice. I’ve been making homemade full-spectrum CBD oil to help calm my dog, Baxter, who gets anxious during thunderstorms. This batch though, I’m worried it might have a bit more THC than previous ones… or at least enough to affect him. I've read a lot about THC being toxic to dogs, and now I’m questioning if I might be accidentally harming him long-term. What concerns me the most: his behavior has been slightly off, more lethargic than usual, and I can’t shake the feeling it could be related. Is it possible that even a trace amount could be causing this? Have any of you had experience with giving your dogs CBD oil, and if so, how do you make sure it’s safe? I love Baxter more than anything and just want to do what’s best for him. Help!
Thanks for the question! THC, the compound found in cannabis that causes a "high," can be toxic to dogs even in small amounts, as dogs are more sensitive to it than humans. Symptoms of THC toxicity can include lethargy, incoordination, drooling, dilated pupils, and even a drop in heart rate. In severe cases, it may lead to tremors or seizures, which requires immediate veterinary attention.
When it comes to full-spectrum CBD products, they can contain trace amounts of THC, which may still pose a risk to your dog. Always choose products specifically designed for pets, as they have the appropriate dosage and minimal THC content. Before trying anything new, it’s a good idea to discuss it with your vet, especially if your dog has underlying health conditions or is on other medications.
For at-home care, if your dog displays mild symptoms, ensure they have a comfortable and safe space to rest. Hydration is also important if they're drooling more than usual. Keep an eye out for any worsening symptoms, like persistent vomiting, excessive lethargy, or difficulty walking.
If you’re concerned about your dog's reaction to any cannabis-related products, it’s best to speak with a professional. I encourage you to book a video consult with Dial A Vet to discuss your specific situation in detail.
