Is my cat just coughing?

Help, I'm really worried about my sweet cat, Luna. She's been making this weird hacking sound for a few days now and I can't tell if it’s just a hairball or something more serious. It usually happens when she’s just lounging around and doesn’t seem to be related to eating or playing. I noticed she doesn’t cough anything up, and she seems frustrated afterward. Otherwise, she’s been acting normal—same crazy energy and appetite. I’m just an anxious pet parent and don’t want to overreact, but at the same time, I can’t shake the feeling that something might be wrong. Has anyone else experienced this with their kitty? I’m considering a vet visit, but any advice in the meantime would be really appreciated.

Answer

Thanks for reaching out with your concern about your cat's coughing. Cats can cough for a variety of reasons, and I'm here to help you figure out what might be going on with your furry friend.

Coughing in cats can be caused by something minor, like a hairball, or something more serious, such as respiratory infections, asthma, or even heart disease. If your cat’s cough sounds dry and happens after grooming, it might simply be a hairball. However, if the cough is persistent, wet-sounding, or if your cat is having trouble breathing, it could be something more concerning.

At home, you can monitor your cat by ensuring their environment is free from irritants like smoke or dust, as these can trigger or worsen coughing. Keep their water bowl filled with fresh water to help them stay hydrated, which can sometimes alleviate minor respiratory issues.

Watch for signs like labored breathing, lethargy, loss of appetite, or if the coughing episodes become more frequent or severe—these could indicate a more serious condition that needs immediate attention from a vet.
