Hi there! Thanks for reaching out with your concern about your cat. Constipation can indeed be uncomfortable for our feline friends and can sometimes signal other health issues. Let's see what's going on.
Constipation in cats can be caused by a variety of things, including dehydration, dietary issues, or even stress. Older cats can also experience constipation due to arthritis, which makes it painful to squat in the litter box. It can sometimes be linked to other medical conditions, like kidney disease.
At home, make sure your cat has plenty of fresh water to stay hydrated. You might try adding a bit of canned food to their diet to increase moisture intake. Also, ensure their litter box is clean and easy to access—sometimes just a more inviting litter box can encourage them to go.
Watch for signs of straining, small or very hard stools, and a lack of appetite, as these can indicate more serious issues. If your cat is vomiting, lethargic, or showing any discomfort, get in touch with a vet promptly.
If things don't improve, I recommend scheduling a video consult with us at Dial A Vet. We'd be happy to assess your cat's health and guide you towards the best next steps. We’re here to help you and your furry friend!
Is my cat constipated?? X-ray in comments
I'm really worried about my fur baby, Luna. She hasn't been using her litter box like she usually does. Normally, she’s in there every day at least once, but I realized today that it’s been almost three days since I’ve had to scoop any poop. She’s eating and drinking okay, but she seems a bit more lethargic and keeps sitting in that hunched position. I took her to the vet, and they did an X-ray, which I’ve attached for anyone who knows how to read those better than I do! The vet mentioned something about her possibly being constipated, but I didn't really understand the technical stuff they were saying, and I was too overwhelmed at the time to ask more questions. Has anyone else dealt with something like this? I’m anxious here and could use some advice or similar experiences. Thanks in advance!
