Question:

Is it okay to give my dog Vetmedin only once a day instead of two?

I'm really worried about my dog right now and could use some advice. My sweet old golden retriever, Max, has been on Vetmedin for his heart condition, and the vet prescribed it twice a day. But with my crazy work schedule lately, I've been struggling to give it to him on time every time. I was wondering if anyone knows if it's okay to give Vetmedin just once a day instead of twice. I hate thinking I might be messing up his treatment and potentially making his condition worse. He's been such a trooper through everything, and I just want to do what's best for him. Has anyone else dealt with this or asked their vet about changing the dosage frequency? I just need to know if a once-a-day schedule might still keep him okay. Thanks in advance for any advice or similar experiences you can share.

Answer:

Thanks for reaching out with your question! Vetmedin is a commonly prescribed medication for dogs with heart conditions, and getting the dosage right is important for your pup’s health. Vetmedin is typically given twice a day because it helps to maintain stable levels of the medication in your dog’s system, which is crucial for effectively managing their heart condition.

Giving Vetmedin only once a day might not provide the consistent support your dog needs, potentially reducing the medication's effectiveness. This can lead to increased symptoms related to heart disease, such as coughing, difficulty breathing, or lethargy.

If you're finding it challenging to stick to the twice-a-day schedule, there might be alternative ways to manage it, like setting reminders or coordinating with family members. However, I'd recommend sticking with your vet's instructions and checking in with them if any adjustments need to be considered.

Keep an eye out for signs that your dog's heart condition might be worsening. These include increased coughing, difficulty breathing, fainting, or a swollen belly. If you notice any of these signs, it's best to seek veterinary advice promptly.

I strongly recommend booking a video consult with one of our vets at Dial A Vet. They can provide personalized guidance and help ensure your dog is getting the best care possible.

The "Ask a Vet" forum on Dial A Vet offers general information and helpful tips on pet health, but it's not a substitute for professional veterinary care. The advice here doesn't create a veterinarian-client-patient relationship, and our vets can't diagnose or treat your pet remotely. For emergencies or specific medical concerns, always contact your local veterinarian immediately. Your pet's health is unique, and decisions should only be made after consulting with a qualified professional. What an amazing service, at my wits end as I knew my beautiful dog had an ear infection, could not get into the vet for 4 days. Never knew there was vets online until I googled. Within 15 minutes on a Sunday I was taking to beautiful Samantha who diagnosed and treated our Jasper. Only $49. She trusted that we knew our boy and gave us lots of advice. I will definitely be using dial a vet every time and sharing with all my friends and family. Absolutely fantastic kind caring service. 11/10
