Is it normal for a dog's nipples to leak w/o being pregnant?

Help, what do I do? My dog Bella, who’s never been pregnant, just started leaking a bit from her nipples, and I’m kind of freaking out here. I noticed it last night when we were snuggling on the couch, and at first, I thought maybe it was just water or something, but it’s definitely coming from her. She’s been acting totally normal otherwise—running around like her usual playful self and eating like a champ, but it’s just so weird to me. I’m not sure if I should rush to the vet or if this is something that can happen and I'm just being paranoid. Has anyone else ever experienced anything like this with their dog? Any advice would be really appreciated.

Answer

You're doing the right thing by asking! A dog's nipples leaking can be concerning, especially if she's not pregnant. There are a few potential reasons for this. One possibility is a false pregnancy, where hormonal changes can mimic the signs of pregnancy, including milk production. This usually resolves on its own in a few weeks.

Another possible cause could be an infection such as mastitis, which is inflammation in the mammary glands, often accompanied by other symptoms like swelling, redness, and warmth in the area.

At-home care includes monitoring your dog for additional signs like lethargy, loss of appetite, or fever, which could suggest something more serious. Keep her comfortable and ensure she has a clean, dry resting area.

Watch for any signs of a serious issue like foul-smelling discharge, a noticeable change in behavior, or if the leaking persists for an extended period. These might warrant a closer look from a vet.

For peace of mind and a more tailored approach, I recommend booking a video consult with Dial A Vet. This will allow us to explore her condition more thoroughly and consider her overall health.
