Is it fine for me to walk my almost 3 month old puppy without a vaccine?

I really need some advice right now. I've got this adorable little pup, just shy of three months old, and I'm confused about his vaccines. We haven't been able to get him his shots just yet, and I'm anxious about whether it's okay to take him on short walks around the block. He's just so full of energy, and I feel guilty keeping him cooped up inside all the time. But then there's this part of me that's worried it might be unsafe without his vaccinations up to date. I see other puppies out and about, and I'm torn between wanting him to enjoy the world and making sure he's protected. What's the best thing to do in this situation? Any advice or experiences would really help ease my mind.

Answer

Thanks for your question! It's great to see you're getting your puppy started with walks. However, it's important to be cautious when it comes to vaccines and outdoor adventures at this young age. Puppies are particularly vulnerable to infectious diseases, like parvovirus and distemper, before they are fully vaccinated. These diseases can be picked up from contaminated ground or encounters with unvaccinated dogs.

Your puppy should have a series of vaccinations starting at 6-8 weeks of age with boosters every 3-4 weeks until they're about 16 weeks, depending on your vet's schedule. To keep your puppy safe, it's best to avoid public areas like parks or sidewalks until they’re fully vaccinated.

For now, you can safely exercise and socialize your puppy at home or in controlled environments, like playdates with vaccinated dogs, to ensure they are getting the socialization they need. Also, consider carrying your pup to new environments to get them used to different sights and sounds without the risk of exposure.

Watch for signs of illness, such as lethargy, vomiting, diarrhea, or a lack of appetite, and contact your vet if you notice any of these.

If you have concerns about your puppy's vaccination schedule or their health, a video consult with Dial A Vet can provide personalized advice and peace of mind.
