Is it cruel to separate cats?

Help, I'm really struggling with a decision here. I've had two cats, Max and Luna, for a few years now. They’ve always been the best of buddies—playing, grooming each other, and even sleeping curled up together. But my situation is about to change; I'm moving in with my partner who is unfortunately allergic to cats. We talked it through, and it seems like the only option is to take just one cat with me and find a new home for the other. My heart breaks at the thought of separating them. I'm terrified that it'll stress them out or, even worse, make them depressed. Has anyone experienced something like this? Can cats adjust to being apart, or am I being selfish by even considering this? I just want what's best for my fur babies but I feel so lost right now. Any advice is appreciated.

Answer

Thanks for the question! Separating cats can be a tricky decision, and whether it's considered "cruel" really depends on the individual cats and the situation. Cats are social creatures but also enjoy their independence. For some cats, being separated might cause stress, especially if they've formed a strong bond. You might notice signs of stress such as increased vocalization, changes in eating habits, or litter box issues.

However, in some cases, separating cats might actually be beneficial, such as when they're not getting along or if one is bullying the other. In these instances, separation can provide them with a more peaceful and stress-free environment.

If you need to separate your cats, try to make the transition as smooth as possible. Ensure each cat has its own space with plenty of their favorite things, like beds, toys, water, and litter boxes, to help them adjust. Spend plenty of time with each cat to reassure them.

Monitor your cats for any signs of severe stress or illness, such as persistent hiding, aggression, or eating and drinking significantly less, which could indicate a more serious issue.

If you notice these signs or have concerns about how your cats are adjusting, it's a good idea to book a video consult with Dial A Vet. We can work together to ensure both of your cats remain happy and healthy.
