Help, what do I do? I’m really worried about Max, my golden retriever. We’ve been trying to tackle his flea problem, and I just used HARTZ Flea and Tick spray on him yesterday afternoon. I also gave him a NexGard chew a couple of days ago, thinking it would be okay since our vet recommended it a while back. But today, he’s acting kind of off—super lethargic and just not his usual bouncy self. He even skipped his breakfast this morning, which he never does. Did I do something wrong by using both? Has anyone else experienced something like this with their dog? Should I take him to the vet, or am I just being paranoid? I'm honestly not sure what's going on and could really use some advice right now!
Thanks for reaching out with your question! It's really important to ensure you're using safe and effective products for your furry friend.
HARTZ Flea and Tick spray and NexGard are both products designed to tackle fleas and ticks, but they work differently. NexGard is an oral chewable that your dog takes once a month, and it works by killing fleas and ticks through systemic action, meaning it's absorbed into your dog's bloodstream. Many pet owners find it convenient and effective, especially for dogs that don't respond well to topical treatments.
HARTZ Flea and Tick spray, on the other hand, is a topical treatment that is applied directly to your dog's coat. While some pet owners use it without issues, it's important to follow the instructions closely and watch for any adverse reactions like excessive itching, redness, or discomfort.
If you're using both together, consult a vet, as combining treatments can increase the risk of side effects. If you notice symptoms like vomiting, diarrhea, or lethargy, those could be signs of a more serious reaction, and reaching out to a vet is crucial.
To ensure you're choosing the safest and most effective prevention plan for your dog, I recommend booking a video consult with one of our vets at Dial A Vet. They can tailor a flea and tick prevention plan just for your dog’s needs.
The "Ask a Vet" forum on Dial A Vet offers general information and helpful tips on pet health, but it's
not a substitute for professional veterinary care. The advice here doesn't create a veterinarian-client-patient relationship, and our vets can't diagnose or treat your pet remotely.
For emergencies or specific medical concerns, always contact your local veterinarian immediately. Your pet's health is unique, and decisions should only be made after consulting with a qualified professional.
