Is gabapentin/trazedone suitable to calm a (very) hyper dog during a 3 day drive across the country?

I'm reaching out because I really need some advice for my baby, Max. We’re gearing up for a three-day cross-country drive next week, and honestly, I’m kind of freaking out. Max is a super energetic lab mix, emphasis on the super, and I’m worried about how he’ll handle being cooped up in the car for that long. The last time we traveled to visit my sister a few hours away, he was bouncing off the walls the entire trip. I talked to my vet, and they mentioned gabapentin or trazodone might help calm him down, but I’m torn. Has anyone used these for their dogs before? I’m really hoping it doesn't make him feel weird or too sleepy. I want him to be comfortable and not stressed, but I also want to make sure he’s safe. If you’ve been through something similar or have any tips, please share! Thanks a ton in advance.

Answer

Hello there! It's wonderful that you're thinking ahead about keeping your pup comfortable during your long journey. Gabapentin and trazodone are both medications that are sometimes used to help dogs stay calm in stressful situations. They work in slightly different ways: gabapentin is typically prescribed for pain and occasionally for its calming effects, while trazodone is commonly used to manage anxiety.

Before considering these options, it's crucial to have a discussion with your vet. They'll need to weigh factors such as your dog's specific behavior, overall health, and any other medications they're taking. The goal is always to ensure your furry friend's safety and well-being.

In the meantime, there are a few at-home tips you can try. Before hitting the road, get your dog moving with a bit of exercise to help burn off excess energy. Keeping their space cozy with their favorite blanket or toy can also bring comfort. And during breaks, let your pet stretch their legs a bit.

Keep an eye on your dog for signs of distress, like excessive panting or drooling, restlessness, or vocalizing. If any of these symptoms become severe, it could indicate that your dog is experiencing more anxiety than anticipated.
