Thanks for reaching out about your concerns with your dog and sourdough starter. Sourdough starter can be potentially dangerous for dogs if ingested. The primary concern is the presence of yeast in the dough. When consumed, the yeast can continue to ferment in a dog's stomach, producing carbon dioxide and alcohol, which can lead to bloating, discomfort, or in severe cases, alcohol poisoning.
If your dog has ingested sourdough starter, watch for symptoms such as vomiting, diarrhea, bloating, excessive drooling, or signs of alcohol intoxication like unsteady walking, lethargy, or disorientation.
At home, you can help reduce the risk by ensuring your dog has access to plenty of water, which can help with dehydration. Monitor your pet closely for any concerning symptoms. If they appear, it's important to contact a vet promptly.
To keep this from happening again, make sure kitchen counters and trash containers are out of reach. Remember, accidents happen, and it's best to stay prepared.

Is discarded sourdough starter dangerous to dogs?
Help! I'm freaking out over here. My dog, Max, just got into the kitchen trash and ate what seems like at least a cup of discarded sourdough starter I tossed out earlier today. I know sourdough starter is just flour and water, but I've read somewhere that the fermentation process might make it dangerous for dogs. He’s a 45-pound Labrador mix and usually pretty resilient, but I’m worried about what this might do to his stomach. It wasn't fully fermented, but it did have that sour smell. What should I watch for in terms of symptoms? Does anyone know if this is something that warrants a trip to the vet or am I just overreacting a bit? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
