Is death painful for dog w/CVD, CHF, Pulm. Hypertension? If so, how to ease pain before I can reach vet?

Help, I’m feeling completely overwhelmed and heartbroken right now. My beloved dog, Max, who has been battling chronic valvular disease, congestive heart failure, and pulmonary hypertension, seems to be in distress, and I’m worried he might be in pain. I know that with his conditions, things were going to get tough, but I didn’t realize it would happen so suddenly. He’s been panting heavily and appears extremely fatigued with little interest in the things he used to love. It’s breaking my heart to see him like this, and I’m scared that he is suffering. Unfortunately, our vet is closed until tomorrow, and I don’t know how to make him comfortable until I can get him there. Are there any safe ways I can help ease his discomfort at home in the meantime? Any tips or advice would be deeply appreciated as I just want to do what’s best for him during this incredibly difficult time. Thank you.

Answer

Thank you for reaching out with your concern. It’s clear how much you care about your dog during this difficult time. Chronic valvular disease (CVD), congestive heart failure (CHF), and pulmonary hypertension can indeed be challenging for our furry companions.

When a dog with these conditions approaches the end of life, they might experience discomfort rather than pain in the traditional sense. Symptoms such as labored breathing, coughing, lethargy, and a decreased appetite can cause distress. It's important to provide a calm and comfortable environment — keep the room quiet, and if your dog is having trouble breathing, elevate their head slightly to assist with airflow.

You might gently stroke their back or chest to provide comfort. Keeping them hydrated is important, but don’t force water if they’re not interested. Monitor for signs like severe difficulty breathing, restlessness, or a loss of consciousness, as these could indicate more significant distress and may require urgent veterinary care.

To ensure your dog’s comfort and discuss any signs you're concerned about, consider setting up a video consult with one of our veterinarians through Dial A Vet. This can help provide peace of mind and guide you on the best way forward for your beloved pet.
