Question:

Is another vet visit pointless?

I'm in a bit of a dilemma here and could use some advice. I have a 6-year-old beagle named Max who I've raised since he was a pup, and he's usually full of energy and mischief. Lately, though, I've noticed he's been super lethargic, not eating much, and seems to have lost interest in his favorite toys. We took him to the vet a couple of weeks ago, and they did some blood tests which came back normal. They said it could just be a virus and gave us some meds, but here we are, and he’s still not himself. I’m worried sick and considering taking him back, but I'm not sure if it’ll just lead to more tests and bills without any real answers. Has anyone been through something similar? Am I overreacting by wanting to take him in again so soon? Any advice or stories would be really appreciated. I just hate seeing my buddy like this.

Answer:

Hello! I'm glad you reached out with your concern, and I'd love to help. Visiting the vet might seem stressful or inconvenient at times, but it’s crucial whenever you're worried about your pet's health. Understanding the underlying cause of your pet's symptoms is important to ensure their well-being.

Now, without more details about what's troubling your pet, let's talk about some general signs that warrant a vet visit. If your pet is experiencing unusual symptoms, such as persistent vomiting or diarrhea, drastic changes in appetite or weight, difficulty breathing, or visible discomfort like limping, these could indicate a more serious issue that needs professional attention.

For less severe situations, like mild digestive upset, you could try offering bland food such as plain boiled chicken and rice while monitoring them closely. Ensure they stay hydrated and keep an eye out for symptoms getting worse.

However, if your pet’s symptoms persist, worsen, or if you notice alarming signs such as blood in stool or urine, lethargy, or severe pain, it’s important to seek veterinary care immediately. Your pet’s health is a top priority, and a vet can perform a thorough examination to provide an accurate diagnosis and appropriate treatment.

  Book A Vet Consultation
The "Ask a Vet" forum on Dial A Vet offers general information and helpful tips on pet health, but it's not a substitute for professional veterinary care. The advice here doesn't create a veterinarian-client-patient relationship, and our vets can't diagnose or treat your pet remotely. For emergencies or specific medical concerns, always contact your local veterinarian immediately. Your pet's health is unique, and decisions should only be made after consulting with a qualified professional. By using this forum, you acknowledge these limitations and agree to seek in-person veterinary advice for all your pet's health needs. View our content guidelines.

It was so easy, I needed some eye drops for my dog and thinking about going to the vet on a weekend made me nervous about the cost involved. Dial A Vet was a much simpler, cheaper option with faster results. Within 10 minutes of the call, I had the medicine I needed for my dog without an expensive consultation.

A great fast efficient service with a qualified vet who was lovely and helpful. Thank you Samantha. I was able to sort my dog at 6pm on a Sunday night for $49 - amazing. Highly recommend.

What an amazing service, at my wits end as I knew my beautiful dog had an ear infection, could not get into the vet for 4 days. Never knew there was vets online until I googled. Within 15 minutes on a Sunday I was taking to beautiful Samantha who diagnosed and treated our Jasper. Only $49. She trusted that we knew our boy and gave us lots of advice. I will definitely be using dial a vet every time and sharing with all my friends and family. Absolutely fantastic kind caring service. 11/10
