I really need some advice and maybe just a bit of reassurance. I know this might sound a bit out there, but I’m in a unique situation and could use some support. I live out in a very rural area, and the closest hospital is quite far away. We recently got snowed in, and it’s impossible to get through the roads. Yesterday, my brother had a really bad fall and hurt his arm pretty badly. It’s swollen, and he’s in a lot of pain, but we can’t get him to a doctor right now. Funny thing is, my neighbor is an excellent veterinarian; he’s incredible with our animals and really knows his stuff. I’ve been wondering, could a vet realistically help with this kind of situation? How much human medical knowledge might they have that could transfer over? I’m stressing out and just trying to consider all our options. Would appreciate any thoughts or experiences you all might have. Thanks!
Hello there! I understand why the idea of a veterinarian performing surgery on a human might be a curiosity. Veterinarians are highly skilled professionals trained extensively to care for a wide variety of animals. Our training covers surgical procedures, anatomy, and physiology, but it's focused on animals rather than humans.
Human and veterinary medicine have overlaps, such as surgical principles and sterile techniques, but they are distinct disciplines with unique challenges. Human anatomy and physiological responses can be quite different, so it’s crucial for people to rely on healthcare providers specifically trained in human medicine for any medical procedures.
If you're in a situation where you're concerned about an emergency or need surgical expertise, it's always best to contact a medical doctor or visit an ER for human medical issues.
For any queries or risks that feel overwhelming regarding your pets, we're here to help ensure they get the best care. If you have more questions or face challenges with your pet that you want to discuss, consider booking a video consult with Dial A Vet. This way, we can help address any concerns with their health directly!
The "Ask a Vet" forum on Dial A Vet offers general information and helpful tips on pet health, but it's
not a substitute for professional veterinary care. The advice here doesn't create a veterinarian-client-patient relationship, and our vets can't diagnose or treat your pet remotely.
For emergencies or specific medical concerns, always contact your local veterinarian immediately. Your pet's health is unique, and decisions should only be made after consulting with a qualified professional.
