If i picked my nose right after petting a friendly stray cat, is it possible for rabies to transmit that way?

I'm feeling a bit anxious and need some advice. Earlier today, I was outside and came across this super friendly stray cat. It seemed really healthy and was purring like crazy, so I couldn't help but pet it for a few minutes. But here's where my anxiety kicks in: not thinking, I absentmindedly touched my nose right after petting the cat. Now I'm freaking out a bit because I know rabies is a serious thing, and I can't shake the thought that there might be some risk. Can rabies even be transmitted like that? I know it's probably a silly question, but can we just talk about it for peace of mind? Thanks for any help or reassurance you can offer!

Answer

Hello there! It's understandable to be concerned about rabies, but let me put your mind at ease. Rabies is typically transmitted through direct contact with the saliva or neural tissue from an infected animal, usually via bites, scratches, or open wounds. Simply petting a cat and then touching your nose is very unlikely to transmit rabies, especially if there are no scratches or bites involved.

However, it's always a good idea to be cautious with stray animals. Strays can carry other bacteria or parasites that might cause mild skin or respiratory irritations. After handling any animal, washing your hands with soap and water is always a good idea.

You should look out for any signs of bites or scratches. If you notice any unexplained wounds or if the cat acted strangely aggressive, it's wise to be more cautious and consult a healthcare professional about potential risks.

If you still have concerns or notice any symptoms like fever or unusual sensations at the contact site, it might be worth discussing further with a professional. Feel free to book a video consult with one of us at Dial A Vet, where we can talk through your worries in more detail. Stay safe and give that stray cat a gentle pat from me, if you see them again!
