i think my dog has a collapsed trachea

Help, I'm really worried about my dog. I have a sweet little Pomeranian named Max, and lately, I've noticed he's been having these strange coughing fits that sound almost like a honking noise. It's been happening more frequently, especially when he's excited or playing. I did some digging online, and it sounds a lot like what people describe as a collapsed trachea. I’m getting anxious seeing him struggle and the sound breaks my heart. We're planning to see the vet soon, but I'm a nervous wreck and would love to hear from anyone who's been through this with their own pet. What should I expect, and are there any ways to help him feel more comfortable in the meantime? Any advice or similar experiences would really help put my mind at ease.

Answer

Thanks for reaching out with your concern. A collapsed trachea can be worrisome, but let's look at the possibilities together. The trachea, or windpipe, carries air from the nose to the lungs. In some dogs, especially small breeds, the cartilage rings supporting the trachea can weaken and collapse, typically causing a honking cough.

There are a few signs to keep an eye on: a persistent, harsh cough that sounds like a goose honk, particularly when your dog is excited or pulls on the leash. Other symptoms include breathing difficulty, exercise intolerance, or signs of distress.

At home, try using a harness instead of a collar to reduce pressure on your dog's neck. Keep the air around your dog clean and smoke-free, and avoid obesity by maintaining a healthy diet, as excess weight can worsen respiratory issues.

Watch for serious signs like blue-tinged gums, extreme difficulty in breathing, or fainting. These require immediate veterinary attention.

If your dog is showing signs of a collapsed trachea, I'd recommend booking a video consult on Dial A Vet. This way, we can assess your dog's condition in more detail and guide you on the best course of action.
