I think my dog ate a printer cartridge

I'm really freaking out right now and could use some advice. I came home from work today to find Lulu, my usually well-behaved golden retriever, gutting a package I stupidly left on the coffee table. At first, I thought maybe it was just another delivery with a toy or something, but then I noticed it was a printer cartridge. I can't see any ink on the floor, but she's been acting a bit off—kind of lethargic and not her usual bouncy self. I’m not sure if I'm overreacting or if this is really bad. Has anyone else dealt with anything like this? I’m trying not to panic, but I’m worried since I’ve read that the ink isn't exactly healthy for them. Any advice on what to do next would be appreciated. Thank goodness it's not the middle of the night because I’d really be losing it then. Help!

Answer

Oh no, it sounds like you’re going through a bit of a stressful situation! Dogs can sometimes get into things they shouldn’t, and printer cartridges can be especially concerning due to the chemicals within the ink.

First and foremost, try to stay as calm as possible. It’s important to monitor your dog closely for any signs of distress or toxicity. This might include vomiting, diarrhea, excessive drooling, changes in eating or drinking habits, or lethargy. Inks can be irritating to the stomach and intestines, and in some cases, they can be toxic if consumed in large amounts.

At home, be sure your dog has access to plenty of fresh water to help flush out their system and avoid giving them any food or treats that may exacerbate stomach upset. Keep an eye out for any pieces of the cartridge itself, as ingestion of the plastic could potentially lead to a blockage or other issues.

If you notice any severe symptoms such as persistent vomiting, abdominal pain, or difficulty breathing, it’s crucial to contact a veterinarian immediately as these could indicate a more serious issue.
