I stepped on my cats tail, HARD, and he didn't even flinch.

Help, what do I do? This morning around 7 AM, I accidentally stepped on my cat Max's tail really hard when I was stumbling around in the dark, and he didn't even flinch or make a sound. It was so strange because usually he's super vocal if he even thinks someone's about to step near him. I feel so guilty, like, what if he's hurting but just not showing it? He’s a pretty laid-back cat, but still, you'd expect some reaction, right? He's been eating and playing like normal since then, but I'm just worried that maybe he's in pain and hiding it. Has anyone else experienced something like this? Should I be rushing him to the vet, or am I overthinking it?

Answer

Thanks for reaching out. I completely understand why you're worried, especially after such a surprising reaction from your cat. Typically, when a cat's tail is stepped on, you'd expect them to react immediately because it's quite an uncomfortable experience. There could be a few reasons why your cat didn't flinch. It's possible that maybe their tail isn't as sensitive as usual due to an earlier unnoticed injury or nerve damage. In some cases, cats might also not react if they're feeling particularly stressed or unwell.

At home, keep an eye on your cat's behavior for any changes such as limping, excessive grooming of the tail, or any sudden aggression or hiding, which could indicate pain or discomfort. Gently feel along the tail for any lumps or bumps, or if your cat shows signs of pain or discomfort when you do this.

If you notice swelling, a change in their gait, or a decrease in their usual activity or appetite, it might be time to take things a bit more seriously.

It's always better to err on the side of caution when it comes to our furry friends. Consider booking a video consult with a Dial A Vet professional to have a more detailed discussion about your cat's specific situation.
