I saw a cat get hit by a car, is there anything I could have done?

I’m really shaken up right now and need some advice. Earlier this evening — it was maybe around dusk — I saw a cat dart out into the road and get hit by a car. The driver didn’t even stop, and I just froze. It all happened so fast, and I can’t stop thinking about it. I keep wondering if I should’ve tried to help the poor thing or if there’s something more I could’ve done in that moment. I’ve got my own cat at home, and it’s hard not to imagine what I’d want someone to do for her. Has anyone been in a similar situation? What’s the right thing to do if this happens again, heaven forbid?

Answer

You're doing the right thing by asking. Seeing a cat experience something so traumatic is distressing, and it’s natural to want to help. In such situations, your quick thinking and actions could indeed make a difference. If you find a cat hit by a car, your first step should be to assess whether it's safe for you to approach. Then, check if the cat is conscious and breathing. If possible, gently move the cat to a safe area away from traffic, supporting its head and spine.

Using a soft blanket or towel to scoop them up can help minimize movement as you transport them carefully. At this point, it’s crucial to get the cat to a veterinarian as quickly as possible, as they might have internal injuries that aren’t immediately apparent.

Signs to watch out for include heavy bleeding, difficulty breathing, inability to move, or unconsciousness. Even if a cat seems okay, shock or internal damage might not show immediately, and professional help is essential.

In the future, if you ever face a similar situation, calling a local veterinarian or animal emergency service for guidance is also a good step. Consider booking a video consult with Dial A Vet to talk through what you saw and feel reassured about recognizing future emergencies.
