Question:

I had to put my 12.5 year old husky to sleep today and I'm absolutely shell shocked and traumatized.

I can’t even process what happened. Today, I had to make the heartbreaking decision to put my 12.5-year-old husky, Max, to sleep, and now I feel completely shell-shocked. This whole thing feels surreal, like a bad dream I can’t wake up from. Max has been my constant companion since he was a pup, always by my side through thick and thin, and the house feels so unbearably empty without him. I knew this day would come eventually, but I wasn’t prepared for how fast or how much it would hurt. The vet said it was the kindest thing to do, given his deteriorating health, but I just keep questioning my decision and wondering if there was anything else I could have done. How do I begin to deal with this overwhelming sadness and guilt? I really need some advice or just to hear from others who have been through something like this.

Answer:

I'm so sorry to hear about your loss. Saying goodbye to a beloved pet is incredibly difficult, and it's normal to feel the way you do right now. Your husky was a special part of your life and provided so much joy and companionship over the years.

Grieving the loss of a pet can be very similar to grieving a human family member. You may feel a range of emotions that can include sadness, anger, or even guilt. It's important to give yourself permission to experience these feelings and remember that healing takes time.

Consider creating a small memorial for your husky. This could be anything from planting a tree or flower in their memory to framing a favorite photo. These small acts can often bring comfort and serve as a positive outlet for your grief.

If you have other pets, remember that they might also feel the absence of their furry friend. Maintaining a routine can help them—and you—find some semblance of normalcy during this difficult time.

Watch for signs that could mean you need more support, such as prolonged sadness, depression, or withdrawal from daily activities. Should these feelings persist, it might be useful to speak with a professional.

The "Ask a Vet" forum on Dial A Vet offers general information and helpful tips on pet health, but it's not a substitute for professional veterinary care. The advice here doesn't create a veterinarian-client-patient relationship, and our vets can't diagnose or treat your pet remotely. For emergencies or specific medical concerns, always contact your local veterinarian immediately. Your pet's health is unique, and decisions should only be made after consulting with a qualified professional. By using this forum, you acknowledge these limitations and agree to seek in-person veterinary advice for all your pet's health needs. View our content guidelines.

It was so easy, I needed some eye drops for my dog and thinking about going to the vet on a weekend made me nervous about the cost involved. Dial A Vet was a much simpler, cheaper option with faster results. Within 10 minutes of the call, I had the medicine I needed for my dog without an expensive consultation.

What an amazing service, at my wits end as I knew my beautiful dog had an ear infection, could not get into the vet for 4 days. Never knew there was vets online until I googled. Within 15 minutes on a Sunday I was taking to beautiful Samantha who diagnosed and treated our Jasper. Only $49. She trusted that we knew our boy and gave us lots of advice. I will definitely be using dial a vet every time and sharing with all my friends and family. Absolutely fantastic kind caring service. 11/10
