I really need some advice. So, earlier today, while I was walking home from work, I stumbled upon this little stray cat just wandering near a busy intersection. I couldn't just leave her there with all that traffic, so I coaxed her over with some gentle coaxing and a granola bar I found in my bag, of all things. She's a small tabby, looks pretty young, maybe a year old at most, and she seemed so scared and frail. I've got her at home now, but I'm not exactly sure what to do next. I already have a dog, Rex, who's curious but mostly indifferent to her presence. I gave her some water and a bit of tuna, which she devoured like she hadn't eaten in ages. Should I take her to the vet right away or wait a bit to see if she's okay? Also, I don’t know if she belongs to someone or if she’s truly a stray. What steps should I take to find out if anyone is looking for her? I want to make sure she's safe, but I'm feeling a bit lost here. Any guidance would be really appreciated. Thanks in advance!
Hi there! It’s wonderful of you to care for a stray cat. Cats can be masters of disguise when it comes to hiding illness. Let’s make sure this new feline friend is healthy and comfortable.
Firstly, observe for any obvious signs of injury or illness. Check for limping, sneezing, excessive scratching, or any discharge from the eyes or nose. Also, note if the cat is underweight or appears to be struggling to breathe.
Stray cats often face external parasites like fleas and ticks, or internal ones like worms. While a full vet visit is essential, you can start by providing some basic care at home, such as ensuring the cat has a safe, warm space to relax and is given nutritious food and fresh water.
Watch for serious signs, such as not eating or drinking, vomiting, diarrhea, or extreme lethargy. These could indicate medical issues needing immediate attention.
Engaging with a vet is the best way to ensure your new friend’s health, so please consider booking a video consult with us. We can guide you on the next steps and help determine if any treatments are necessary. We’re here to support you both as you start this new journey together!
