Question:

I don't know what to do, dog ingested ibuprofen.

I'm really freaking out right now and could use some advice. My silly but sweet Labrador, Max, somehow got into my bag while I was at work and managed to chew open a bottle of ibuprofen. I must have accidentally left it within his reach this morning before dashing out the door. I came home to find that familiar dusty orange powder all over the floor and Max looking guilty next to him. I have no idea how many pills he might have eaten, but it worries me to think he’s ingested any at all. I've read that ibuprofen can be super dangerous for dogs, affecting their stomach and kidneys, but it's a Sunday evening and my vet's office is closed. I've called an emergency vet nearby, but they’re swamped and told me there's a wait. In the meantime, I'm just sitting here, anxiety spiraling, wondering if any of you have been through something similar or know what I should be doing right now to keep Max safe until we can get him some professional help. Any advice, even just some reassurance, would be really appreciated. Thanks for reading.

Answer:

Oh dear, I understand how alarming this can be. Ibuprofen is toxic to dogs and can lead to serious health issues, so it's important to act quickly. When ingested, it can cause stomach ulcers, kidney damage, or even more severe complications. The level of toxicity depends on your dog’s size, the amount ingested, and how long ago they consumed it.

First things first, try to prevent any further ingestion. Make sure the bottle or any remaining pills are secured out of your dog’s reach, and don't attempt to induce vomiting unless a vet has advised you to do so—it can sometimes cause more harm.

Watch for symptoms like vomiting, diarrhea, black or tarry stools, loss of appetite, increased thirst, or lethargy. These could signal more serious issues such as gastrointestinal bleeding or kidney failure. If your dog displays any of these signs, it’s critical to seek emergency veterinary care immediately.

While at home, you can keep your dog comfortable and hydrated, but reach out to a vet as soon as possible. This situation is best handled with professional guidance to ensure your furry friend's safety.

The "Ask a Vet" forum on Dial A Vet offers general information and helpful tips on pet health, but it's not a substitute for professional veterinary care. The advice here doesn't create a veterinarian-client-patient relationship, and our vets can't diagnose or treat your pet remotely. For emergencies or specific medical concerns, always contact your local veterinarian immediately. Your pet's health is unique, and decisions should only be made after consulting with a qualified professional. By using this forum, you acknowledge these limitations and agree to seek in-person veterinary advice for all your pet's health needs. View our content guidelines.

What an amazing service, at my wits end as I knew my beautiful dog had an ear infection, could not get into the vet for 4 days. Never knew there was vets online until I googled. Within 15 minutes on a Sunday I was taking to beautiful Samantha who diagnosed and treated our Jasper. Only $49. She trusted that we knew our boy and gave us lots of advice. I will definitely be using dial a vet every time and sharing with all my friends and family. Absolutely fantastic kind caring service. 11/10
