i accidentally gave my cat double the zyrtec (cetirizine dihydrochloride) dose.. what do i do

I’m kind of freaking out right now and really need some advice. So, my cat Muffin has been dealing with some terrible allergies, and our vet suggested giving her Zyrtec. I was half-asleep this morning and somehow managed to give her two pills instead of one, which means she got double the dose she’s supposed to have. I feel so awful! She seems fine so far, just a little more sleepy than usual, but I’m not sure if that’s something to worry about. I’m really nervous that I might have messed up. Has this happened to anyone else? Should I be rushing to the vet, or is there something I can do at home to help until I can get in touch with them? Any advice would be appreciated because I’m really stressing out over here. Thanks in advance!

Answer

Oh no, I understand how easily that can happen! First, let’s take a deep breath together. Cats can sometimes tolerate a little more medication without severe issues, but it's great that you caught this right away.

Zyrtec (cetirizine) is generally considered safe for cats at the correct dosage, primarily to treat allergies, but an accidental double dose may cause some drowsiness or mild gastrointestinal upset like vomiting or diarrhea. Keep an eye on your kitty for any unusual behaviors over the next 24 hours.

Ensure your cat has plenty of fresh water available and a quiet, comfy spot to rest. This can help ease any drowsiness and allow them to sleep it off. Watch closely for any signs of more serious reactions, such as marked lethargy, difficulty walking, tremors, or hyperactivity. These might indicate your cat is not feeling well and needs prompt veterinary attention.

While you have done a good job reaching out, it’s always a good idea to consult with a vet to ensure everything is fine. If you notice any concerning signs or just want peace of mind, please consider setting up a video consult with one of our Dial A Vet specialists. We’re here to help!
