I'm really hoping to get some advice from fellow cat owners or anyone who has experience with this. I have a super sweet tabby named Luna who apparently loves the taste of my hand lotion. I noticed a couple of times now that after I put on lotion, especially if I use any with a floral or fruity scent, Luna will try to lick my hands. I'm really worried that it could be harmful to her if she ingests it. I've read mixed things online, some saying certain ingredients can be toxic, and others saying it's not a big deal unless consumed in large amounts. She's my little fur baby and the thought of unintentionally causing her harm freaks me out. Has anyone been through this before or has any advice about how to handle the situation? Is there a safer type of hand cream or something I can do to discourage her from trying to lick it off? Appreciate all the help!
Hi there! Thanks for reaching out about your kitty. Cats are curious creatures, and it's not uncommon for them to come into contact with things like hand lotion. Most hand lotions are generally not toxic to cats in small amounts. However, some might contain ingredients that could cause mild irritation or stomach upset, especially if your cat licks it off your skin or their fur.
Potential concerns can arise if the lotion contains harmful ingredients like essential oils or chemicals that cats are particularly sensitive to. If your cat ingests a significant amount, it could lead to symptoms like vomiting, diarrhea, drooling, or lethargy.
For at-home care, I recommend washing your hands after applying lotion and keeping your cat from licking it off. If your kitty's already had a taste, keep an eye on them for any unusual behavior or signs of irritation.
If you notice persistent symptoms such as difficulty breathing, a lack of appetite, or if your cat seems overly lethargic, it’s important to seek veterinary attention right away, as these could be signs of a more serious reaction.
