Question:

How to humanely euthanize a dog when no vet care is available

I'm going through something incredibly tough right now and could really use some advice. My sweet old girl, Daisy, has been with me for over 14 years, and her health has rapidly declined over the past few months. She's stopped eating, barely moves, and is visibly in pain. It's breaking my heart to see her like this. I've tried contacting several vets in the area, but we're in such a remote location and no one is available to help. The nearest clinic is over three hours away, and I don't have reliable transportation to get there. I want to do what's best for her and ensure she's not suffering any longer. I genuinely don’t know what to do and could really use some guidance on what's humane and kind in this situation. How do I make sure I’m doing the right thing for her? Any advice would mean the world to me right now.

Answer:

Hello there,

First, I'm very sorry to hear that you’re facing this difficult situation. When it comes to euthanizing a beloved pet, it’s crucial to ensure they are as comfortable and stress-free as possible. While I completely understand the challenges you’re facing with accessing vet care, it’s important to emphasize that euthanasia is a delicate process that requires professional veterinary expertise to ensure it’s done humanely and painlessly.

If there’s any way to find a mobile veterinary service or emergency clinic, even if it means a bit of travel, I strongly encourage exploring that route. Vets have the training and tools to guarantee that your dog’s passing is peaceful, without any unnecessary distress.

In the meantime, focus on keeping your dog as comfortable as possible. Offer a soft and familiar blanket, speak to them soothingly, and allow them to be in a calm and quiet environment. If they are in pain or discomfort, observing signs like difficulty breathing, crying out, or restlessness, it's more urgent to seek veterinary help immediately.

Please consider booking a video consultation with one of our vets on Dial A Vet. We can offer guidance on available local resources and further support tailored to your situation.

Take care, and know that you are not alone in this.

  Book A Vet Consultation
The "Ask a Vet" forum on Dial A Vet offers general information and helpful tips on pet health, but it's not a substitute for professional veterinary care. The advice here doesn't create a veterinarian-client-patient relationship, and our vets can't diagnose or treat your pet remotely. For emergencies or specific medical concerns, always contact your local veterinarian immediately. Your pet's health is unique, and decisions should only be made after consulting with a qualified professional. By using this forum, you acknowledge these limitations and agree to seek in-person veterinary advice for all your pet's health needs. View our content guidelines.

It was so easy, I needed some eye drops for my dog and thinking about going to the vet on a weekend made me nervous about the cost involved. Dial A Vet was a much simpler, cheaper option with faster results. Within 10 minutes of the call, I had the medicine I needed for my dog without an expensive consultation.

A great fast efficient service with a qualified vet who was lovely and helpful. Thank you Samantha. I was able to sort my dog at 6pm on a Sunday night for $49 - amazing. Highly recommend.

What an amazing service, at my wits end as I knew my beautiful dog had an ear infection, could not get into the vet for 4 days. Never knew there was vets online until I googled. Within 15 minutes on a Sunday I was taking to beautiful Samantha who diagnosed and treated our Jasper. Only $49. She trusted that we knew our boy and gave us lots of advice. I will definitely be using dial a vet every time and sharing with all my friends and family. Absolutely fantastic kind caring service. 11/10
