How to Exercise a Guinea Pig?

I’m really at a loss right now and could use some advice! I've got this adorable little guinea pig named Peanut, and lately, I’ve been worried that he’s not getting the exercise he needs. It's just that he seems way more sluggish than usual, especially in the evenings after I get home from work. He just chills in one corner of his cage or nibbles on hay, which can’t be normal, right? I’ve tried setting up a little pen for him with tunnels and toys, hoping he’d get more active, but he only sniffs around for a few minutes and then plops down like he’s so over it. It’s been going on for a week or so now, and I'm starting to feel guilty that maybe I'm not doing enough. What do you guys do to keep your little furballs active and happy? Any tips or ideas would be super appreciated!

Answer

Appreciate the question — let's unpack this. Exercising a guinea pig is a great way to ensure they stay healthy and happy. These little guys are naturally active and curious, so giving them opportunities to move around is beneficial.

Start by providing a safe, guinea pig-proofed area for floor time. This could be a designated space in your home where they can explore without any hazards like electrical cords or small objects they might chew. Enclose the area to make sure they can't escape, and supervise them for safety.

Tunnels and small obstacles can encourage movement. You can craft simple tunnels using paper bags or cardboard tubes. Hide some of their favorite veggies within these setups to motivate them to move and explore.

Guinea pigs also enjoy social interaction, so spending time with them during their exercise sessions can be very rewarding. However, be mindful of their comfort and don't chase or handle them excessively, as they can get stressed.

Watch out for signs that your guinea pig might not be feeling well, such as lethargy, changes in eating habits, or unusual behavior. If they seem unwell, it's worth scheduling a check-up.
