Question:

How much should I be feeding my puppy?

I really need some advice and I'm hoping you can help. I've just adopted the sweetest little puppy, a chocolate lab named Max, and I'm absolutely in love with him. But I'm starting to wonder if I'm feeding him right. He's constantly acting like he's starving, and every time I even go near the kitchen he follows me around, pleading with those big puppy eyes. I'm currently giving him half a cup of puppy kibble three times a day, which is what the breeder recommended, but it just doesn’t seem like enough, or maybe I’m overthinking it. Max is really energetic and growing fast, and I just want to make sure I'm doing right by him. Has anyone been through this or have any guidance? Any help would be really appreciated—Max and I are new to this whole puppy business! Thanks so much in advance.

Answer:

Hello there! Congratulations on your new puppy — they must be such a bundle of joy! Getting their nutrition right is really important to ensure they grow up healthy and strong.

The amount you should feed your puppy depends on a few factors, like their age, breed, expected adult size, and how active they are. Puppies generally need more calories than adult dogs since they’re in a rapid growth phase. As a rough guideline, you can divide their daily intake into three meals until they’re about six months old, then switch to two meals a day.

Be sure to check the feeding guidelines on your puppy's food package, as they're a helpful starting point. Puppies of small breeds might need more frequent meals due to their fast metabolism, while larger breeds will need specific formulations to support slower, safe growth.

Watch your puppy’s body condition and adjust portions if they're gaining too much weight or seem too thin. You should be able to feel, but not see, their ribs easily.

Keep an eye out for persistent diarrhea, vomiting, lethargy, or unexpected weight changes — these might indicate a need for a dietary adjustment or a potential health issue.

Feeling unsure? Book a video consult with one of our vets at Dial A Vet. We’d be delighted to help you create a tailored feeding plan suited to your puppy’s specific needs.

The "Ask a Vet" forum on Dial A Vet offers general information and helpful tips on pet health, but it's not a substitute for professional veterinary care. The advice here doesn't create a veterinarian-client-patient relationship, and our vets can't diagnose or treat your pet remotely. For emergencies or specific medical concerns, always contact your local veterinarian immediately. Your pet's health is unique, and decisions should only be made after consulting with a qualified professional. What an amazing service, at my wits end as I knew my beautiful dog had an ear infection, could not get into the vet for 4 days. Never knew there was vets online until I googled. Within 15 minutes on a Sunday I was taking to beautiful Samantha who diagnosed and treated our Jasper. Only $49. She trusted that we knew our boy and gave us lots of advice. I will definitely be using dial a vet every time and sharing with all my friends and family. Absolutely fantastic kind caring service. 11/10
