How long to wait for Distemper to clear from yard/house prior to allowing un/under-vaccinated dogs back in?

I’m freaking out a little here. Yesterday, I found out a dog on my street got diagnosed with distemper, and I’m worried because it played in my yard last week. My puppy’s only had the first round of shots, and I don’t know if it’s safe to let him outside again. I’ve cleaned everything like a maniac, but I really don’t know how long the virus can stick around. I’m asking every pet parent here—how long did you wait to let your fur babies out again? Or should I just keep him inside for now? He’s a ball of energy and the poor guy keeps scratching at the back door like he’s been grounded. Any advice would be a lifesaver.

Answer

Thanks for reaching out. It's really important to ensure your yard and home are safe for all pets, especially when it comes to something as serious as distemper. Canine distemper is a viral disease that spreads through respiratory secretions or contact with contaminated environments. The virus itself doesn't survive long outside a host, typically only a few hours to a couple of days in standard conditions. However, colder, damp environments may allow it to last longer.

To be on the safe side, it's best to wait at least a few days to a week before bringing unvaccinated or under-vaccinated dogs back into the area. During this time, you can clean potentially contaminated surfaces with a disinfectant known to kill viruses. Always check labels to ensure they're pet-friendly.

Signs that a dog might have contracted distemper include fever, discharge from the eyes and nose, lethargy, coughing, vomiting, and neurological symptoms like seizures. If you notice any of these signs, contact a vet immediately.

For further peace of mind or if you're unsure about handling the situation, consider booking a video consult with one of our vets at Dial A Vet. They can offer personalized advice based on your specific circumstances.
