Question:

How long before deciding a food doesn't work for a puppy?

I'm really hoping for some advice here because I'm feeling kind of lost. I recently adopted a sweet 4-month-old puppy named Charlie, and I've been trying to get him on a good feeding routine. I started him on a highly recommended brand of puppy food about two weeks ago, but I've noticed he's been having irregular bowel movements and seems a bit less spirited than usual. He used to gobble up his food, but now he hesitates and only eats when he's really hungry. I know diets can take time to adjust, but I'm worried I might be doing something wrong or that this food just isn't the right fit for him. How long should I stick it out before I consider switching his food up? Any signs I should be looking out for that indicate it's not working? Any advice would be super appreciated. Thank you!

Answer:

Hello there! It's great that you're keeping a close eye on your puppy’s diet. Changing food can be a process, and it’s important to ensure your pup is adjusting well.

Generally, it takes about 7 to 10 days to transition to a new food fully. During this period, you'll slowly mix the new food with the current one, gradually increasing the new food's proportion. This gradual change helps your puppy's digestive system adjust and can prevent tummy upsets.

If you're noticing signs like persistent diarrhea, vomiting, excessive gas, or itchy skin during or after the transition, it may indicate the food isn’t suitable. These symptoms could point to an intolerance or allergy to certain ingredients. Additionally, if your puppy doesn’t seem to have as much energy or begins losing weight despite normal or increased appetite, these are also reasons to rethink the food choice.

While at home, ensure your puppy stays hydrated, especially if experiencing diarrhea or vomiting. Monitor their energy levels and behavior closely. If these symptoms continue for more than a week or if your puppy shows signs of lethargy, dehydration, or significant weight loss, it's time to seek professional advice.

For peace of mind and tailored advice, consider booking a video consult with one of our vets on Dial A Vet. We're here to help ensure your little one gets the nutrition they need to grow strong and healthy.

What an amazing service, at my wits end as I knew my beautiful dog had an ear infection, could not get into the vet for 4 days. Never knew there was vets online until I googled. Within 15 minutes on a Sunday I was taking to beautiful Samantha who diagnosed and treated our Jasper. Only $49. She trusted that we knew our boy and gave us lots of advice. I will definitely be using dial a vet every time and sharing with all my friends and family. Absolutely fantastic kind caring service. 11/10
