Question:

How long after spay can I remove the cone on my dog? Day 8 today

I could really use some advice. My dog, Bella, was spayed eight days ago, and she's been wearing this cone ever since. I know it's for her own good, but it's heartbreaking to see her struggle with it. She's constantly bumping into things and just seems so uncomfortable. The vet mentioned it might be okay to remove it after a week, but I'm super paranoid about it getting infected or her licking the stitches. Has anyone been through something similar? I want to make sure she's healing properly before I take it off. She's such a sweet girl, and all I want is for her to be happy and safe. Any guidance would be really appreciated!

Answer:

Hello there! I hope you and your furry friend are doing well. It's great that you're taking such good care of her after her spay surgery. The cone, also known as an Elizabethan collar, is crucial in preventing her from licking or biting the incision site, which can lead to infections or delayed healing.

Generally, you should keep the cone on your dog until your vet gives you the all-clear, which is typically around 10 to 14 days after the surgery. Since you’re on day 8, you're getting close, but it's important to ensure the incision is healing properly before removing it.

At home, you can gently check the incision site for any signs of redness, swelling, discharge, or if your dog seems to be in pain. These could indicate an infection and would require attention from a vet. Encourage her to stay calm and avoid strenuous activities that could strain the incision.

If you see any worrying signs or if she seems uncomfortable, a video consult with one of our vets can provide peace of mind and guidance. It’s always better to be cautious and ensure she’s healing as she should. Feel free to book a session with Dial A Vet if you have any concerns!

The "Ask a Vet" forum on Dial A Vet offers general information and helpful tips on pet health, but it's not a substitute for professional veterinary care. The advice here doesn't create a veterinarian-client-patient relationship, and our vets can't diagnose or treat your pet remotely. For emergencies or specific medical concerns, always contact your local veterinarian immediately. Your pet's health is unique, and decisions should only be made after consulting with a qualified professional. By using this forum, you acknowledge these limitations and agree to seek in-person veterinary advice for all your pet's health needs. View our content guidelines.

What an amazing service, at my wits end as I knew my beautiful dog had an ear infection, could not get into the vet for 4 days. Never knew there was vets online until I googled. Within 15 minutes on a Sunday I was taking to beautiful Samantha who diagnosed and treated our Jasper. Only $49. She trusted that we knew our boy and gave us lots of advice. I will definitely be using dial a vet every time and sharing with all my friends and family. Absolutely fantastic kind caring service. 11/10
