Help, what do I do? My cat, Jasper, broke his leg a couple weeks ago, and we got him this cute little cast, but every morning I find he's taken it off during the night! It's like he’s turning into Houdini or something, and I don't understand how he does it. I've tightened it (not too much, don't worry) and tried distracting him, but nothing's working. It's happening almost every night now, and I'm worried it’s making his leg worse instead of better. Has anyone else dealt with a stubborn kitty like this? I’m at my wit's end here!
Thanks for reaching out! Cats can be quite resourceful, especially when it comes to something uncomfortable like a cast. It's not uncommon for them to try to wiggle out of it.
Cats often remove a cast because it feels strange or restrictive, or it might be itching due to healing. A few strategies might help keep it in place: try using a pet-friendly, snug but not tight, fabric cover or sleeve over the cast to make it less accessible. Distraction is another tool—offer toys or treats to keep your kitty’s attention elsewhere. Additionally, keeping the cat mostly indoors and in a quiet space can reduce fidgeting.
Monitoring this behavior is important. If your cat removes the cast continuously, it could interfere with healing, leading to a possible reinjury or delay in recovery. Watch for swelling, redness, or any foul smell from the cast, which could indicate infection and require a vet’s attention.
If your cat keeps having issues, or you notice any signs of distress or pain, I recommend booking a video consult with one of our Dial A Vet professionals. They can provide more specific guidance tailored to your cat's needs and help ensure a smooth recovery.
