Question:

How can a cat survive 1-2 months with no food or water?

guys, I’m really worried and could use some advice. My cat, Whiskers, went missing almost two months ago. I tried everything—putting up flyers, searching the neighborhood, calling shelters—but there was no sign of her. I’d given up hope, assuming the worst. But today, incredibly, she just wandered back into my yard! She's super skinny but seems okay otherwise. I know it sounds impossible for a cat to survive that long without food or water, so I’m wondering if anyone has experienced anything similar or has insights into how she could have managed it. Could she have been finding food or water somewhere I just haven’t noticed? She’s been a bit wary, hiding in corners, and not eating much even now. Any tips on how to get her back to her normal self? I’d love to hear your thoughts and experiences. Thanks so much!

Answer:

Hello there! It's understandable to be worried about your cat’s well-being if they haven’t been eating or drinking properly. In reality, cats can't survive without food and water for 1-2 months. Typically, a cat can only go a few days without water and about a week or two without food before they experience serious health issues.

If you notice your cat refusing to eat or drink, it could be due to several reasons like dental problems, gastrointestinal issues, stress, or changes in their environment. Cats also might stop eating if there's something wrong in their mouths, such as ulcers.

At home, you can try offering different types of wet food or warming it slightly to make it smell more appealing. Providing fresh water in a clean bowl and ensuring their environment remains calm and familiar can also help encourage eating and drinking.

Watch for signs that might indicate something more serious: significant weight loss, vomiting, diarrhea, lethargy, or jaundice (yellowing of the skin or eyes). If you see any of these symptoms, it's important to seek professional help promptly.

I'm here to help guide you further, so please consider booking a video consult through Dial A Vet. This way, we can review your cat’s symptoms in detail and develop a plan to get them back to good health.

The "Ask a Vet" forum on Dial A Vet offers general information and helpful tips on pet health, but it's not a substitute for professional veterinary care. The advice here doesn't create a veterinarian-client-patient relationship, and our vets can't diagnose or treat your pet remotely. For emergencies or specific medical concerns, always contact your local veterinarian immediately. Your pet's health is unique, and decisions should only be made after consulting with a qualified professional. What an amazing service, at my wits end as I knew my beautiful dog had an ear infection, could not get into the vet for 4 days. Never knew there was vets online until I googled. Within 15 minutes on a Sunday I was taking to beautiful Samantha who diagnosed and treated our Jasper. Only $49. She trusted that we knew our boy and gave us lots of advice. I will definitely be using dial a vet every time and sharing with all my friends and family. Absolutely fantastic kind caring service. 11/10
