Question:

HILLS S/D OUT OF STOCK, what should I substitute?

I'm really struggling here and could use some advice. My 7-year-old beagle, Max, has been on Hill's Prescription Diet s/d for his urinary health issues, and it's been such a game-changer for him. His vet recommended it after a bout of painful bladder stones a few months back, and since then, he’s been doing so much better... until now. I went to stock up today only to find out it's completely out of stock, everywhere I look! I'm panicking because I don't want him to go back to being in pain. Does anyone know of a good temporary substitute or alternative? I’m planning to call our vet first thing tomorrow, but in the meantime, I’d appreciate any recommendations or experiences anyone has had. Max is pretty picky with his food, and I just want to make sure he stays healthy and happy. Thanks for any help you can offer!

Answer:

Hi there! I completely understand your concern about not being able to find Hill’s Prescription Diet s/d. It’s specifically formulated to help dissolve certain types of bladder stones, so finding a substitute is important for your pet’s health.

First, let’s identify why your pet is on this diet. Hill’s s/d is usually prescribed for struvite stones. If that’s the case, keeping your pet on a specialized diet is crucial to prevent further stone formation. In the meantime, you’ll want to ensure your pet stays hydrated, as drinking plenty of water helps dilute urine and may assist in preventing new stones from forming.

Without a direct substitute from the same brand, it’s crucial not to switch diets abruptly or without guidance, as this could upset your pet’s condition. While waiting for your add-on order or for stock to come in, try to maintain a consistent routine for your pet and monitor their urine output to ensure they're not straining to urinate or developing blood in the urine.

Keep an eye out for signs of discomfort, such as frequent attempts to urinate, blood in urine, or general lethargy, as these could indicate a serious issue needing immediate veterinary attention.

I’d recommend booking a video consult with Dial A Vet so we can discuss your pet's specific needs in more detail and find the best temporary solution. Looking forward to helping you and your furry friend!

The "Ask a Vet" forum on Dial A Vet offers general information and helpful tips on pet health, but it's not a substitute for professional veterinary care. The advice here doesn't create a veterinarian-client-patient relationship, and our vets can't diagnose or treat your pet remotely. For emergencies or specific medical concerns, always contact your local veterinarian immediately. Your pet's health is unique, and decisions should only be made after consulting with a qualified professional. By using this forum, you acknowledge these limitations and agree to seek in-person veterinary advice for all your pet's health needs. View our content guidelines.

What an amazing service, at my wits end as I knew my beautiful dog had an ear infection, could not get into the vet for 4 days. Never knew there was vets online until I googled. Within 15 minutes on a Sunday I was taking to beautiful Samantha who diagnosed and treated our Jasper. Only $49. She trusted that we knew our boy and gave us lots of advice. I will definitely be using dial a vet every time and sharing with all my friends and family. Absolutely fantastic kind caring service. 11/10
