Question:

Hemangiosarcoma confirmed in cat's toe

I’m really struggling right now and could use some advice. My sweet cat, Whiskers, was just diagnosed with hemangiosarcoma in her toe, and I’m completely heartbroken. It all started because I noticed she was limping a bit and seemed to be in pain. I took her to the vet thinking it might just be a sprain or something minor, but after a few tests and a biopsy, they hit me with this devastating news. The vet mentioned it’s a rare and aggressive form of cancer, and I honestly didn’t catch everything she said because my mind was spinning. I’m trying to wrap my head around the treatment options, like surgery or even amputation, and the prognosis sounds so uncertain. I feel so lost and don't want her to suffer. Has anyone else been through this with their pet? How did you cope, and what steps did you take? Any advice or shared experiences would really help right now. Thanks in advance.

Answer:

Hi there,

I'm really sorry to hear about your cat's diagnosis. Hemangiosarcoma is a type of cancer that affects the blood vessels, and while it's not very common in cats, it can sometimes appear in unusual places like the toes. This can be tough news to receive, but knowing what to watch for can be really helpful going forward.

In the short term, make sure your cat is as comfortable as possible. You might notice limping or an unwillingness to put weight on the affected paw; gentle handling and providing a cozy, quiet space can be comforting. Keep the area clean and monitor for any signs of infection, such as redness, swelling, or discharge.

It's also important to monitor for more serious signs. If your cat starts showing signs of lethargy, loss of appetite, or starts hiding more than usual, these can be signals that the condition is progressing and it's time to consult a vet right away.

Given the seriousness of hemangiosarcoma, booking a video consult with one of our vets at Dial A Vet would be a great next step. We can discuss treatment options, pain management, and any other concerns you might have. We're here to support you and your furry friend through this challenging time.

The "Ask a Vet" forum on Dial A Vet offers general information and helpful tips on pet health, but it's not a substitute for professional veterinary care. The advice here doesn't create a veterinarian-client-patient relationship, and our vets can't diagnose or treat your pet remotely. For emergencies or specific medical concerns, always contact your local veterinarian immediately. Your pet's health is unique, and decisions should only be made after consulting with a qualified professional. By using this forum, you acknowledge these limitations and agree to seek in-person veterinary advice for all your pet's health needs. View our content guidelines.

What an amazing service, at my wits end as I knew my beautiful dog had an ear infection, could not get into the vet for 4 days. Never knew there was vets online until I googled. Within 15 minutes on a Sunday I was taking to beautiful Samantha who diagnosed and treated our Jasper. Only $49. She trusted that we knew our boy and gave us lots of advice. I will definitely be using dial a vet every time and sharing with all my friends and family. Absolutely fantastic kind caring service. 11/10
