Getting in heat cat spayed

I'm really at a loss and could use some advice. I've got a sweet kitty named Luna who's just started going into heat for the first time. It's honestly breaking my heart — she's yowling almost non-stop, rolling around on the floor, and just seems so uncomfortable. The thing is, I’ve been planning to get her spayed, but I didn’t expect her to go into heat this soon. I've read conflicting things online about whether it’s safe to spay a cat while they’re in heat. Some say it's riskier and others say it's fine. I'm worried about making the wrong decision and potentially causing her harm. Scheduling wise, it's a bit tricky because my local vet is always super booked, but I’d find a way if need be. Has anyone else been through this? What did you decide and how did it go? Any shared experiences or advice would be massively appreciated right now!

Answer

Thanks for reaching out with your question! Spaying a cat in heat is a common concern for many pet owners. While it is generally safe, it can be a bit more complicated than when your cat is not in heat.

When a cat is in heat, their reproductive organs are swollen with increased blood flow, which can make the surgery a bit longer and slightly increase the risk of bleeding. However, for many veterinarians, this is a routine procedure even when a cat is in heat.

At home, you can help your cat stay calm and comfortable. Providing a quiet, cozy spot for her to relax can reduce stress and keep her from getting too active. If the yowling or behavioral changes are difficult to manage, distracting her with toys or play can help burn off some of her excess energy.

Keep an eye out for signs of a serious issue after the surgery, such as excessive bleeding, signs of infection like swelling or redness around the incision, or if your cat is lethargic and uninterested in eating. These would warrant a call or visit to your vet.
