Question:

Gabapentin for cat with ruptured abcess

I'm really in need of some advice right now. My poor cat, Whiskers, developed a nasty abscess that ruptured a couple of days ago. It was honestly heart-wrenching to see him in so much pain. The vet prescribed gabapentin to help manage his discomfort, but that made me nervous since it's not something we've used before. I’ve read some stuff online, but I’m still unsure about how it's going to affect him. How long does it usually take to work? Has anyone had experience with it making their cat too drowsy or disoriented? I’m worried about getting the dosage right and making sure he’s comfortable but also safe. Any tips or personal experiences you could share would really mean a lot right now. Thanks in advance!

Answer:

Hello there,

I'm sorry to hear about your cat's ruptured abscess. It’s good you’re reaching out for advice! Abscesses in cats are often caused by infections, usually from bites or scratches, where bacteria get trapped under the skin. Once an abscess ruptures, it can actually begin to heal, but it requires proper care to avoid further infection.

Gabapentin is a medication that's sometimes used in cats for pain management, so I suspect your veterinarian prescribed it to help manage any discomfort your kitty is experiencing. It's important to follow the dosage instructions closely, as every cat's needs can vary.

For at-home care, keep the area clean by gently cleaning it with warm water and a clean cloth twice a day. You can use a saline solution for cleaning, but be sure to avoid harsh chemicals or soaps that could irritate the wound.

Watch for signs that might indicate the need for more immediate veterinary attention. These include excessive swelling, redness, heat in the area, ongoing discharge with a bad odor, or if your cat seems lethargic, loses appetite, or shows signs of pain despite the medication.

It might be a great idea to book a video consult with one of our vets through Dial A Vet. They can assess your cat's situation more thoroughly and ensure everything's on the right track for recovery.

Take care and give your feline friend some extra cuddles from me!

The "Ask a Vet" forum on Dial A Vet offers general information and helpful tips on pet health, but it's not a substitute for professional veterinary care. The advice here doesn't create a veterinarian-client-patient relationship, and our vets can't diagnose or treat your pet remotely. For emergencies or specific medical concerns, always contact your local veterinarian immediately. Your pet's health is unique, and decisions should only be made after consulting with a qualified professional. By using this forum, you acknowledge these limitations and agree to seek in-person veterinary advice for all your pet's health needs. View our content guidelines.

What an amazing service, at my wits end as I knew my beautiful dog had an ear infection, could not get into the vet for 4 days. Never knew there was vets online until I googled. Within 15 minutes on a Sunday I was taking to beautiful Samantha who diagnosed and treated our Jasper. Only $49. She trusted that we knew our boy and gave us lots of advice. I will definitely be using dial a vet every time and sharing with all my friends and family. Absolutely fantastic kind caring service. 11/10
