French Bulldog Hip Dysplasia (F) 5 YO

I really need some advice and maybe just a little bit of support, as I’m feeling really overwhelmed right now. My 5-year-old French Bulldog, Molly, has just been diagnosed with hip dysplasia, and I'm heartbroken. She's been my little shadow for years, always so full of energy and life, but lately, I noticed she’s been limping and seemed uncomfortable whenever she’d try to jump onto the couch. The vet confirmed it's hip dysplasia, and now I’m faced with all these decisions about treatment options. Has anyone else been through this with their pup? I’m trying to do what’s best for her, but I’m so worried about her quality of life and don’t want her to be in pain. If anyone has advice on pain management or tips for making her more comfortable, I’d really appreciate it. Thanks so much for taking the time to read this.

Answer

Hello there,

I'm sorry to hear about your French Bulldog's hip dysplasia; it's a common issue in many breeds and can be quite uncomfortable for our furry friends. Hip dysplasia is a condition where the hip joint doesn't form properly, leading to pain and arthritis over time. In French Bulldogs, you might notice signs like limping, stiffness, or a "bunny hop" gait when they run.

At home, you can help by keeping her at a healthy weight to reduce joint stress. Regular, gentle exercise is key—try short, controlled walks rather than high-impact activities. A comfy, supportive bed can make a big difference too, easing pressure on her joints.

Keep an eye out for signs that the condition might be worsening, such as increased pain, reluctance to move, difficulty standing, or a change in her usual playful behavior. These could indicate a need for more immediate veterinary assessment.

It's always a good idea to discuss comprehensive care options with a vet. If you're seeing these signs or just want to ensure your pup's comfort and quality of life, I recommend booking a video consult with one of our vets at Dial A Vet. We’d love to help guide you and your pup towards a comfortable future!
