Question:

Freeze-dried pork for cats as flavor boosts to hide Rx food flavor

I'm really hoping for some advice or suggestions. My sweet kitty, Oliver, has recently been put on a prescription diet that he absolutely hates. It's become a daily struggle to get him to eat, and I’m worried he's not getting the nutrition he needs. I've read a bit about using freeze-dried pork as a way to make the food more palatable, sort of a flavor boost to disguise the taste of his meds. Has anyone tried this? I’m curious if it works or if there are better alternatives out there. I just want to make sure it's safe and something that won’t upset his stomach further or interfere with his Rx food. Any thoughts or experiences would be super appreciated! Thanks in advance, I just want to make my little guy happy and healthy again.

Answer:

Hello there! It sounds like you're trying to make your cat's prescription food a bit more appealing, which is a common challenge for many pet owners. Freeze-dried pork can be a tasty topper, but there are a few things to consider.

Cats can be finicky, and adding a little flavor can help them eat their necessary Rx food. However, it's important to ensure that any toppers don't interfere with the nutritional balance of the diet prescribed by your vet. Freeze-dried pork can sometimes be high in fat or contain unnecessary additives, so be sure to use it sparingly and choose plain, meat-only options.

Watch for any signs of digestive upset, such as vomiting or diarrhea, particularly when introducing new foods. If you notice these or if your cat becomes less interested in their main food, it might be time to reevaluate the topper choice.

For at-home care, introduce the freeze-dried pork gradually, monitoring your cat's response. You can also try crumbling it into tiny pieces to blend better with their food.

If your kitty seems to struggle with their prescribed diet or if you're worried about their nutrition, it might be helpful to book a video consult with us at Dial A Vet. We can offer personalized advice and ensure you're on the right track!

What an amazing service, at my wits end as I knew my beautiful dog had an ear infection, could not get into the vet for 4 days. Never knew there was vets online until I googled. Within 15 minutes on a Sunday I was taking to beautiful Samantha who diagnosed and treated our Jasper. Only $49. She trusted that we knew our boy and gave us lots of advice. I will definitely be using dial a vet every time and sharing with all my friends and family. Absolutely fantastic kind caring service. 11/10
