Found a newborn cat in trash

everyone! I’m really in need of some advice and support. This morning while taking out the trash, I heard these tiny mews and found a newborn kitten literally in a garbage bag. It's breaking my heart just thinking about it. The poor thing is so small, no mother in sight, and seems barely a day or two old. I'm sitting here with this little tiny life in my hands, not really sure what my next steps should be. I’ve never cared for a cat this young before—what do I feed it? How do I keep it warm? Should I try to find a foster care or a rescue? I’m overwhelmed and feeling a bit clueless, so any tips or guidance would be super appreciated. It's super urgent because the little guy seems really frail!

Answer

Hi there! First, I want to commend you for taking in this little one. Finding a newborn kitten can be a daunting but rewarding experience. Newborn kittens require lots of care, so I’m here to guide you with some initial steps.

Newborn kittens, often called “neonates,” are extremely fragile and need warmth and nutrition above all. If the kitten was in the trash, it may be cold or dehydrated. Carefully wrap the kitten in a soft, warm blanket or towel and keep them close to a low heat source, like a warm water bottle wrapped in a towel, to regulate their body temperature.

These little guys need to be fed every 2-3 hours with special kitten formula, as cow's milk isn’t suitable. You can use a syringe or a small bottle for feeding. Remember to help them eliminate waste by gently rubbing their belly and genital area with a damp cotton ball.

Watch for signs of trouble, such as labored breathing, refusal to eat, or becoming excessively cold or limp. If you notice any of these, it’s crucial to seek professional help right away.

I strongly recommend setting up a video consult with one of our vets at Dial A Vet. They can give you tailored advice and help ensure your new friend is off to a healthy start!
