Flea / worm treatment day after vaccines?

Help, I'm really worried about what to do. I just took my little Shar-Pei, Daisy, to the vet yesterday for her vaccinations, and she was such a brave girl. But now I've realized she's due for her flea and worm treatment today. I'm freaking out a bit because I'm not sure if it's okay to give her both treatments so close together. She's never had any noticeable reactions to her vaccines in the past, but I can't shake the anxiety that it might be too much for her system all at once. I don't want to overload her with chemicals but also don't want her to be uncomfortable dealing with any unwanted little critters. Has anyone had a similar experience? Should I wait a few more days, or would it be okay to go ahead with the treatment today? Any advice would be appreciated. Daisy is my fur baby, and I just want to make sure I'm doing the best for her.

Answer

Thanks for the question! It's great that you're staying on top of your pet's vaccinations and preventative care. Generally, it's safe to give your pet their flea and worm treatments shortly after vaccination. Vaccines can sometimes cause mild side effects like tiredness or a slight decrease in appetite, similar to what we might experience after our own vaccinations. It's a good idea to monitor your pet for any signs of discomfort after both vaccines and flea/worm treatments.

One thing you might consider is keeping track of any side effects after each treatment, so you’ll have a reference for the future. If you notice mild signs of discomfort, such as tiredness or a reduced appetite, these are usually short-lived. Ensure they have a comfy, quiet space to rest and plenty of water to stay hydrated.

However, keep an eye out for more severe reactions like vomiting, diarrhea, hives, or difficulty breathing, as these can be signs of an allergic reaction and require immediate veterinary attention.

If you're ever unsure or if your pet has had issues with treatments in the past, a video consult with a vet can provide personalized advice and peace of mind. Feel free to book a chat with us on Dial A Vet if you need further guidance.
