Question:

flea and tick removal medication for dogs

Help, I'm at my wit's end with my poor dog, Max! Every time I look at him, he's scratching like crazy and it breaks my heart to see him so uncomfortable. I've noticed some fleas and ticks on him despite using a preventative treatment from the pet store. I thought I was doing everything right, but clearly, I'm missing something or the product isn't effective enough. I'm really worried about the ticks because I've read they can be dangerous. Max is a large Golden Retriever, about 4 years old, and I just want to make sure I'm using the best possible option to remove these pests and protect him. Does anyone have recommendations for flea and tick medications that have worked well for them? Also, any tips on how to apply them correctly or additional things I should be doing to prevent this from happening again? Thanks a million in advance for any advice.

Answer:

Thanks for your question! Keeping your dog free from fleas and ticks is important for their health and comfort. Fleas and ticks can cause discomfort, allergic reactions, and even more serious health issues if left untreated.

There are several safe and effective flea and tick medications available for dogs. These vary from topical treatments to oral medications, and even collars that provide extended protection. Factors like your dog's age, weight, and health status play a role in choosing the right product. It's always a good idea to read labels carefully and follow the application instructions.

When administering at-home treatments, make sure your dog is calm and relaxed. Applying after a bath, when the dog's skin is clean and dry, can be ideal. Ensure that the medication is spread evenly over the skin, especially with spot-on treatments, and avoid bathing your dog for at least 48 hours afterward to allow the treatment to fully absorb.

Some signs to watch for that might indicate a more serious issue include excessive scratching, skin irritation, lethargy, or any unusual behavior after applying a flea and tick product. If you notice any of these signs or if your dog's condition doesn't improve, it might be time to consult a vet.

If you have specific concerns or need help selecting the right product, I recommend booking a video consult with one of our vets at Dial A Vet. We’re here to help!

The "Ask a Vet" forum on Dial A Vet offers general information and helpful tips on pet health, but it's not a substitute for professional veterinary care. The advice here doesn't create a veterinarian-client-patient relationship, and our vets can't diagnose or treat your pet remotely. For emergencies or specific medical concerns, always contact your local veterinarian immediately. Your pet's health is unique, and decisions should only be made after consulting with a qualified professional. It was so easy, I needed some eye drops for my dog and thinking about going to the vet on a weekend made me nervous about the cost involved. Dial A Vet was a much simpler, cheaper option with faster results. Within 10 minutes of the call, I had the medicine I needed for my dog without an expensive consultation.

What an amazing service, at my wits end as I knew my beautiful dog had an ear infection, could not get into the vet for 4 days. Never knew there was vets online until I googled. Within 15 minutes on a Sunday I was taking to beautiful Samantha who diagnosed and treated our Jasper. Only $49. She trusted that we knew our boy and gave us lots of advice. I will definitely be using dial a vet every time and sharing with all my friends and family. Absolutely fantastic kind caring service. 11/10
