Female dog [10F] has a pink bump on vulva?

I’m really hoping someone can help because I’m kind of freaking out right now. I just noticed a small pink bump on my 10-year-old dog’s vulva while giving her a bath today, and it’s never been there before. She seems totally fine otherwise — eating, playing, and her usual cuddly self — but I can’t stop worrying. It doesn’t seem to hurt her when I touch it, but it’s just odd, you know? Could it just be some kind of bug bite or irritation? I feel so clueless and a bit overwhelmed. Any advice on what this might be or if I should rush her to the vet? Please and thank you!

Answer

Appreciate the question — let's unpack this. It's understandable to be concerned when you notice something unusual with your dog. A pink bump on a 10-year-old female dog's vulva can be caused by several things. Common benign causes can include a cyst or a minor irritation. In some cases, dogs can develop growths like papillomas, which are generally harmless.

However, it's important to be aware that more serious conditions, such as infections, tumors, or polyps, can also present similarly.

For now, you can gently clean the area with warm water and a mild, pet-safe antiseptic solution to ensure there's no additional irritation or infection. Make sure she doesn't lick or scratch at it, as that can cause further irritation or introduction of bacteria.

Look out for signs such as rapid growth of the bump, changes in color, ulceration, discharge, or if your dog begins to excessively lick the area. These could indicate a need for immediate veterinary attention.

Given your dog's age and the location of the bump, I recommend booking a video consult with one of our veterinarians. This can help us take a closer look and guide you on the best next steps to ensure your furry friend stays healthy and comfortable.
