I could really use some advice right now. My sweet cat, Luna, was recently diagnosed with feline cystitis. The vet gave us some medication and recommended a diet change, but it's been over a week, and she still seems really uncomfortable. She's been peeing outside the litter box, which she never does, and she's constantly licking herself. I just can’t help but worry that something more might be going on. Have any of you been through something similar with your cats? At what point did you decide to get a second opinion? I don’t want to overreact, but I hate seeing her in distress. Any experiences or advice you can share would be really appreciated!
Hello there! I completely understand your concern about your cat’s health. Feline cystitis, also known as feline lower urinary tract disease (FLUTD), can be quite uncomfortable for our feline friends. It often leads to symptoms like frequent urination, straining to urinate, or urinating outside the litter box.
There can be several potential causes for this condition, including stress, bladder stones, infections, or in rare cases, tumors. Stress, in particular, plays a significant role, and changes in your cat’s environment or routine might be contributing factors.
At home, you can help manage this by ensuring your cat has plenty of fresh water to drink, encouraging more frequent urination which can help flush out any irritants. Also, try to keep their environment as stress-free as possible—consider adding cat trees or places for them to hide and relax. Using a litter box with low sides can also encourage them to use it more comfortably.
However, it’s crucial to be vigilant for signs that may indicate a more serious issue. If your cat is unable to urinate or seems to be in pain, these could be red flags of a urinary blockage, which requires immediate veterinary attention.
I’d recommend scheduling a video consult with us at Dial A Vet so we can take a closer look at your kitty’s situation and ensure they get the right care. Looking forward to assisting you and your feline friend!
