Question:

Fed my cat too much Meloxicam

I'm really freaking out right now and could use some advice. So, my cat Luna was having some issues lately and the vet prescribed her Meloxicam. Everything was going fine until earlier today when, in my distracted haste, I gave her an extra dose by mistake. She’s a pretty small cat and now I'm scared I might have overdosed her. She’s acting a bit lethargic and isn’t her usual playful self. I’m worried sick and sitting here feeling like the worst pet parent. I've called the vet but they haven’t gotten back to me yet. Has anyone been in a similar situation? What did you do? Should I take her to emergency care ASAP or wait to hear from my vet? Any advice would really help right now. Thanks a lot.

Answer:

Hello! It’s completely understandable to be worried when you think your cat might have had too much medication. Meloxicam is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) often used for pain relief in pets. However, too much can potentially cause problems, particularly for our feline friends.

Cats can be quite sensitive to NSAIDs, and an overdose could lead to tummy troubles like vomiting, diarrhea, and even more serious issues like ulcers or kidney problems. It’s important to monitor your cat closely for any signs of distress, such as lethargy, lack of appetite, or changes in drinking or urination habits.

For now, make sure your cat has access to fresh water and a comfortable resting spot. Try to keep a calm environment to help reduce any stress they might be feeling.

If your cat shows signs of serious discomfort, like vomiting, diarrhea, or seems unusually lethargic, I would recommend seeking veterinary attention as soon as possible.

To put your mind at ease and get tailored advice, consider scheduling a video consult with one of our veterinarians here at Dial A Vet. We can discuss your cat's symptoms in detail and guide you through the next steps.

It was so easy, I needed some eye drops for my dog and thinking about going to the vet on a weekend made me nervous about the cost involved. Dial A Vet was a much simpler, cheaper option with faster results. Within 10 minutes of the call, I had the medicine I needed for my dog without an expensive consultation.

What an amazing service, at my wits end as I knew my beautiful dog had an ear infection, could not get into the vet for 4 days. Never knew there was vets online until I googled. Within 15 minutes on a Sunday I was taking to beautiful Samantha who diagnosed and treated our Jasper. Only $49. She trusted that we knew our boy and gave us lots of advice. I will definitely be using dial a vet every time and sharing with all my friends and family. Absolutely fantastic kind caring service. 11/10
