Question:

Extremely High Liver Enzymes in 13 year old dog

I'm really hoping for some advice or support right now because I'm feeling pretty overwhelmed. My sweet 13-year-old dog, Max, who’s been my buddy through thick and thin, just came back from the vet with some scary news. The vet ran some blood tests because he hadn't been eating well and seemed more lethargic than usual. Turns out, his liver enzyme levels are extremely high, and the vet mentioned it could be due to a number of issues, like liver disease, a tumor, or even just old age catching up to him. They recommended more tests and an ultrasound, but I’m terrified and feeling lost. Has anyone been through something similar with their dogs? What should I expect, and are there any treatments or lifestyle changes that might help him? Max means the world to me, and I just want to make sure I'm doing everything I can to help him. Thanks for any advice or encouragement you can share.

Answer:

Hello! I'm sorry to hear about your dog's elevated liver enzymes. This can understandably be concerning.

Liver enzymes in dogs can be elevated for various reasons, including age-related changes, infections, exposure to toxins, or underlying conditions such as liver disease or Cushing's syndrome. Sometimes, medications can also affect liver function. It’s good to start by considering any recent changes in diet, medications, or environment that might have caused stress on your dog’s liver.

At home, you can help by ensuring your dog is eating a healthy, well-balanced diet. Foods low in fat and rich in lean protein can support liver health. Keep your pet well-hydrated and monitor for any new symptoms like vomiting, loss of appetite, jaundice (yellowing of the skin or eyes), or unusual lethargy.

If you notice these signs, or if there's a noticeable decline in your dog's well-being, it’s crucial to seek immediate veterinary care. Timely intervention can make a significant difference, especially with liver issues.

For a more specific assessment and tailored advice, I'd recommend booking a video consult with one of our Dial A Vet professionals. They can help guide you on the next best steps based on your dog’s unique situation.

The "Ask a Vet" forum on Dial A Vet offers general information and helpful tips on pet health, but it's not a substitute for professional veterinary care. The advice here doesn't create a veterinarian-client-patient relationship, and our vets can't diagnose or treat your pet remotely. For emergencies or specific medical concerns, always contact your local veterinarian immediately. Your pet's health is unique, and decisions should only be made after consulting with a qualified professional. By using this forum, you acknowledge these limitations and agree to seek in-person veterinary advice for all your pet's health needs. View our content guidelines.

What an amazing service, at my wits end as I knew my beautiful dog had an ear infection, could not get into the vet for 4 days. Never knew there was vets online until I googled. Within 15 minutes on a Sunday I was taking to beautiful Samantha who diagnosed and treated our Jasper. Only $49. She trusted that we knew our boy and gave us lots of advice. I will definitely be using dial a vet every time and sharing with all my friends and family. Absolutely fantastic kind caring service. 11/10
