Erythromycin 0.5% Ointment safe/effective for dog?

I'm really hoping for some advice because I'm pretty worried about my fur baby. My Golden Retriever, Max, has been dealing with some sort of eye irritation—his left eye is watery and has this gooey discharge. It’s clear he's uncomfortable, and it's breaking my heart seeing him in any kind of pain. I haven’t been able to get him to the vet yet due to some unexpected car trouble. A friend of mine mentioned they had some erythromycin 0.5% ointment left over from when their dog had an eye issue, and they offered it to me. I'm hesitant though because I’m not sure if it’s safe or effective for Max’s specific situation. Has anyone here used this for their dog’s eye troubles before? How did it go? Should I hold off and try something else until I can get him in with the vet? Thanks so much for any advice or similar experiences you can share.

Answer

Hello there!

Thanks for reaching out with your question about Erythromycin 0.5% ointment for your dog. Erythromycin is an antibiotic typically used to treat bacterial eye infections. It can be helpful, but it's important to ensure that it's the right choice for your furry friend and that the issue is indeed bacterial.

If your dog is experiencing eye issues like redness, swelling, or discharge, these could be signs of a bacterial infection, but they can also result from allergies, irritation, or other eye conditions. Before using any medication, it's a good idea to identify the underlying issue.

In terms of at-home care, you can gently clean the area around your dog's eye with a soft, damp cloth to remove any discharge. Be sure not to touch the eye itself. Additionally, preventing your dog from pawing at the eye can help avoid further irritation.

Watch out for worsening symptoms like severe redness, a lot of discharge, persistent squinting, or if your dog seems to be in pain. These could indicate a more serious issue that needs veterinary attention.
