Enlarged heart/Asthma in 3 y/o cat

Help, I'm feeling so overwhelmed right now. My 3-year-old cat, Whiskers, has been wheezing a lot lately and it's freaking me out. He's always been super playful and full of energy, but over the past week, he's been more lethargic and seems to be having a tough time catching his breath. I took him to the vet yesterday, and they mentioned something about an enlarged heart or asthma, but didn't give a definitive answer yet. They said they need to run more tests. I'm so worried about my little guy. Has anyone gone through something similar with their cat? What should I do in the meantime to help him breathe easier, and what questions should I ask the vet at our next appointment? Any advice or shared experiences would be really appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Answer

Thanks for reaching out with your concern about your cat. Having an enlarged heart or asthma can be worrying, but I'm here to help you understand what might be going on.

In cats, an enlarged heart can be due to several conditions, including hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, which is a thickening of the heart muscle. Asthma, on the other hand, is a respiratory condition where the airways become inflamed and constricted. Both conditions can cause symptoms like coughing, difficulty breathing, lethargy, and decreased appetite.

At home, it's important to create a calm environment for your cat. Keep them indoors to avoid allergens and intense exercise, which can strain their heart or trigger asthma attacks. Make sure they have a quiet, comfortable space to rest.

Be on the lookout for signs indicating your cat needs immediate veterinary attention, such as open-mouth breathing, bluish gums, or collapsing.

You’re doing the right thing by seeking advice. If you notice any of these signs, or if you’re uncertain about what’s happening, it’s important to get a clear diagnosis and management plan. I recommend booking a video consult with us at Dial A Vet to discuss your cat's symptoms in detail and explore the best care options.
