Question:

Dose guidelines for small dog - K9 Advantix II

I'm feeling a bit overwhelmed and could really use some guidance. I have an adorable little Chihuahua mix named Peanut, and I've been trying to do everything right when it comes to her care. We've been dealing with a bit of a flea problem, so I picked up some K9 Advantix II after hearing good things. The issue is that I'm a bit confused about the dosage for such a small doggo. Peanut only weighs around 7 pounds, and I'm terrified of giving her too much and causing harm. The instructions on the box are a bit vague and made for a wider range of dog sizes, which isn't really alleviating my worries. Have any of you had experience with this product for smaller breeds? What dosage do you recommend? I just want to make sure I'm doing the best for my little fur baby. Any advice would be deeply appreciated!

Answer:

Hi there! It's great that you're being proactive about using K9 Advantix II safely for your small dog. This topical treatment helps protect dogs from pests like fleas, ticks, and mosquitoes. For small dogs, it’s important to get the dosage just right to ensure safety and effectiveness.

K9 Advantix II comes in varying formulations depending on your dog's weight. If your dog weighs between 4 and 10 pounds, be sure to use the formula specifically designed for dogs in that weight range. Applying too much can potentially lead to skin irritation or other adverse effects.

If you've already applied it, monitor your dog for any signs of discomfort like excessive scratching, redness at the application site, or any unusual behaviors such as lethargy or lack of appetite. These could indicate a reaction. In such cases, gently washing the site with mild soap and rinsing with lukewarm water may help. However, if your dog shows any severe symptoms like vomiting, difficulty breathing, or neurological signs (such as tremors or seizures), it’s important to seek immediate veterinary care.

If you have further questions or concerns, it’s a good idea to book a video consult with one of our vets through Dial A Vet to ensure you’re giving your furry friend the best care possible!

The "Ask a Vet" forum on Dial A Vet offers general information and helpful tips on pet health, but it's not a substitute for professional veterinary care. The advice here doesn't create a veterinarian-client-patient relationship, and our vets can't diagnose or treat your pet remotely. For emergencies or specific medical concerns, always contact your local veterinarian immediately. Your pet's health is unique, and decisions should only be made after consulting with a qualified professional. What an amazing service, at my wits end as I knew my beautiful dog had an ear infection, could not get into the vet for 4 days. Never knew there was vets online until I googled. Within 15 minutes on a Sunday I was taking to beautiful Samantha who diagnosed and treated our Jasper. Only $49. She trusted that we knew our boy and gave us lots of advice. I will definitely be using dial a vet every time and sharing with all my friends and family. Absolutely fantastic kind caring service. 11/10
